Include lumber or sheet goods, hardware, finish, blades and bits, delivery, and your installation time. For prebuilt products, include anchors, accessories, and any professional help.
Treat capacity claims differently
Commercial systems may provide tested or documented ratings under stated conditions. A DIY shelf is only as strong as its design, material condition, joinery, anchoring, and workmanship; do not copy a rating from a different build.
Plan for the next change
Adjustable shelves and modular rails are easier to reconfigure. A built-in can use every inch, but may be harder to alter when vehicles or storage categories change.
Be honest about the skills a DIY build needs
Square, level framing and properly rated anchors matter more than the wood or hardware you choose. If you have not built a load-bearing shelf before, a small practice run is worth it before committing lumber to a full-height run.
