Record the wall envelope

Measure width at floor, middle, and top; garage walls and floors are not always square. Mark outlets, switches, windows, doors, pipes, meters, and any required service access.

Find the usable depth

Park normally, open every relevant door, and measure the narrowest passage. Subtract a comfortable handling margin rather than choosing a shelf that fills the entire gap.

Measure the storage, too

Record exterior bin width, depth, and height including lid projections. Plan shelf spacing around the loaded containers and leave hand room above them.
