Map fixed obstacles first
Record doors, windows, electrical panels, outlets, stairs, water heaters, openers, rails, and required service clearances. These are the boundaries of the storage plan.
Place zones by routine
Put sports and school gear near the household entry, yard tools near the exterior door, and automotive supplies near the vehicle bay. Seasonal bins can move farther from daily traffic.
Mock up depth before committing
Tape shelf footprints on the floor and wall. Open car doors and carry a representative bin through the space. This simple test catches conflicts that a top-down sketch can miss.
Plan outlets and lighting with the layout, not after it
Task lighting over a workbench and an outlet within reach of a charging shelf are easy to add while walls are still open, and expensive to retrofit once storage is installed. Mark planned fixture and outlet locations on the same sketch used for zones and traffic paths.
