Control storage depth
Measure with the vehicle parked and doors open. Choose shelving depth from the remaining usable space, leaving room to walk and carry items safely.
Use height without losing access
Tall shelves can hold more, but the heaviest bins should stay low and frequently used items should stay within comfortable reach. Keep ladders accessible rather than trapped behind storage.
Give every category a limit
Assign one shelf, bin, or hook run to each category. When the container is full, edit the category before expanding it into the parking area.
Account for every door swing, not just the car
Interior service doors, cabinet doors, and even a workbench’s fold-down leaf all need swing clearance. In a small garage, a storage piece that blocks a door only twice a year still fails the daily-use test the rest of the year.
